By Daniella Samura, Communication Officer Tacugama Community Outreach Program (TCOP) “We all have a responsibility to protect endangered species, both for their sake and for the sake of our own future generations.” (Loretta Lynch, the former United States Attorney General) Wildlife species are the building blocks of Earth’s life-support systems providing us with water, food, fuel and medicines. Sadly, one-third of all animals and plant species could face extinction by “2070” due to climate change (Legal Atlas 2022). The illegal wildlife trade is...
By Haja Isatu Bah (Media and Development Coordinator) “The environment, after all, is where we all meet, where we all have a mutual interest. It is one thing that all of us share. It is not only a mirror of ourselves, but a focusing lens on what we can become.” Dr. Jane Goodall, DBE, Primatologist. As we conclude the celebrations of women’s history month, It is very important that we understand and acknowledge the vital role women play in protecting our environment...
Daniella Samura, Communication Officer Tacugama Community Outreach Program (TCOP) Sierra Leone is a small and beautiful country located on the West Coast of Africa. Its beautiful mountains along the peninsular which resemble a sleeping lion earned it the name “Lion Mountain”. Ironically, many Sierra Leoneans haven’t seen a lion in Sierra Leone. Notwithstanding, Sierra Leone is blessed with a lot of flora and fauna (biodiversity). It is endowed with animals like chimpanzees, forest elephants, pygmy hippos, different species of monkeys, birds, and...

Photo of a West African Elephant PC: Google Daniella Samura, Communication Officer, Tacugama Community Outreach Program (TCOP) Elephant species are just magnificent and breathtaking. They are as huge as a whale and most times as gentle as dove. It is really a beautiful experience for those who are fortune to have seen such a beautiful animal. There are two sub-species of elephants in Africa i.e. the West African Elephant and the African Savannah Elephants. These species of African Elephants can be traced...
Daniella Samura, Communication Officer, Tacugama Community Outreach Program (TCOP) It is really sad to see innocent people losing their lives due to heavy downpour in Freetown. We pray that those who lost their lives on the 28th August 2022 find peace in God’s kingdom. It is no longer hidden that we humans are the architect of our own destruction. The climatic changes due to human practices and this adds to the risk of flooding. Human beings cut down trees in a...

Take a read through the poem titled “Chimps are...
It is as though the rains were just waiting for the Chimpanzee National Animal Awareness and Protection Campaign (CNAAPC) to end before it comes pouring down heavily in the City of Freetown. Well, I guess even nature throws her support for Sierra Leone’s National Animal, the Chimpanzee. As a staff of the Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary (TCS), I am happy because I was part of the historic Chimp Week celebrations, and I am sure the past celebratory week will linger in...
