“A few words.. As I scribble this little note a smile tickles my face, and nostalgic memories of an incredible birthday celebration enables me to put pen to paper and hopefully be able to share the moment with others, that they may too look at arranging unforgettable and original activities, ones like Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary in Sierra Leone can provide. The sanctuary is an incredible place, it is silent whilst noisy, green with jungle and vines, brown with red dust and...
What has football got to do with chimpanzees? That was my first thought when I was asked to help organize a football tournament in the Moyamba district of Sierra Leone. I soon learned that Tacugama does more than just look after the chimps on site. They believe the best way to care for chimpanzees is to make sure they never have to be rescued in the first place. This is achieved by the very busy outreach team who go out...
Giving Day for Apes 2019 happened on the 15th October. We would like to thank everyone for their very generous donations that helped us raise $12,585. You can still donate via the Chimpanzee guardianship programme which is detailed below. 2019 was a remarkable year for us. Not only did we receive a visit from world’s most famous primatologist Jane Goodall, but the government announced – during Jane’s stay with us – the chimpanzee as Sierra Leone’s national animal and new face of...
In August last year, the slope of the Sugar Loaf Mountain in Regent, Sierra Leone, collapsed, killing over a thousand people and leaving many more orphaned and homeless. What caused this catastrophe? Was it a “natural disaster”, the result of bad governance or something else? Could it have been prevented and has anything changed since? Most importantly, what does it have to teach us about our rapidly changing world? On November 28th we will host a London fundraiser to explore these questions....
Råd til dyr (Advice for Animals) is a Danish animal organization providing affordable veterinary care services. They have been kind enough to post a page about Tacugama and are collecting donations in our name. We are happy to provide a link to their website for our supporters as well. Thanks for all that you do! ...
Hi! I’m Alex, a 20 year old volunteer from the UK, studying a geography degree at the University of East Anglia. I am volunteering at Tacugama for a month over the summer break. It has already been a life-changing experience, not only have I learnt so much about Western Chimpanzees but also about the diverse culture that Sierra Leone has to offer as well as the challenges faced by conservation programs such as Tacugama in maintaining the countries remaining natural...
Tacugama staff are incredibly multi-talented and we are so proud to share with you our latest accomplishment. For the inaugural Tacugama Week in May, our staff wrote and recorded this beautiful song about conservation. Now, in honour of the first ever World Chimpanzee Day, July 14, 2018, marking the day 60 years ago when Jane Goodall first landed in Africa to study wild chimpanzees – our staff have done it again! They have released their first music video of the single...
“Don’t go to Sierra Leone. It’s a dangerous place!” That was one of the last comments we heard from family and friends before leaving on our trip to visit Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary just outside Freetown, the bustling capital of Sierra Leone. To be honest, we found comments like that to be quite common among the people we spoke to before we left. People didn’t really know much about Sierra Leone. Most of what people knew was informed by a movie that came...
