In recent years, Tacugama has made considerable progress in Sierra Leone towards
assessing how
110310_Chimp_Group1 many chimpanzees there are and in which areas they live. This is a major achievement considering the limited funding and the challenging terrain of the country with high mountains and very dense rainforest.

You can find out all about the census and how the staff traveled around the country, interviewing the local villagers about chimpanzees and spreading the message about how hunting and keeping chimpanzees is illegal in Sierra Leone.

Another one of Tacugama's projects has been the camera trap survey, which records wildlife in the Peninsula mountains, and the dangers of the encroachment upon the environment from the expansion of Freetown and the construction of a high speed ring road around the peninsula.
