DIRECTIONS

Just 30 minutes outside of Freetown, Tacugama is located on the Regent / Bathurst mountain road in the hills of the Western Area Peninsular National Park. The 100-acre sanctuary is not far from the historic mountain village of Regent.
    BY CAR

1 A: Travelling from western Freetown
keep going on the main Regent Road, past St Mary's supermarket at Hillcot, past ISAT and through Regent and Bathurst villages. About 500m after Bathurst bridge, the right hand turn to the sanctuary is signposted from the main road (the road sign says "Congo Dam/Chimpanzee Park").

1 B: Travelling from the provinces and eastern Freetown
leave the main road at Jui Junction by the Safecon fuel station, taking the road to Kossoh Town and Grafton. In Grafton follow the mountain road through Mongegba and Morthaim. The left hand turn to the sanctuary is signposted from the main road about 3km after Morthaim (the road sign says "Congo Dam/Chimpanzee Park").

2: After the turnoff "Congo Dam/Chimpanzee Park"
On leaving the mountain road follow the narrow and bumpy road for about another 1km uphill until you see a Tacugama signboard and an uphill right turn. The final hundred meters are very steep. With a normal car park at the bottom of the steep hill, after the signboard and walk up (5 minutes). If you have a 4x4 engage low range 4 wheel drive and come up to the sanctuary car park.

    PUBLIC TRANSPORT

    Poda-poda (minibus)
If using the poda-poda from Freetown you will need to change at Hillcot Junction to get to Regent. It takes 40 minutes to stroll from Regent to Tacugama. You can also take an Okada (motorbike) from there and ask them to take you to ‘the zoo’.

    Okada (motorbike)
The Okada will take you to Regent, but the drivers might not know Tacugama. In Regent you can change to a local Okada and ask them to take you to ‘the zoo’.

    Regular taxi
It's also possible to charter a taxi that can bring you straight from Freetown within a five minute (uphill) walk of the sanctuary. They might not know Tacugama so tell them it’s close to Regent and show directions for cars above. It is worth planning to ask them to wait for you at the sanctuary for your return journey.
