Birds and Breakfast

The forest reserve surrounding Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary is full of beautiful and rare birdlife, and we would like to offer you a great opportunity to join us for half a day of walking with an expert guide, who will help you spot and identify many of our resident species. Come and learn how to distinguish malimbes, finches, sun birds, maninkins and others from their colours, calls and sizes.

The gentle exploration of the trails around Tacugama will introduce you to Sierra Leone's amazing birds and allow you to enjoy the spectacular scenery of the Western Area close to Regent village. With our early morning start, it gives the best opportunity to see and hear a wide variety of birdlife. With a maximum group size of ten, you'll have plenty of opportunities to learn from your knowledgeable guides, who can inform you in English and Krio.

We start the walks from the lodges here at Tacugama at dawn
with tea/coffee and a light snack before following our well researched route that will ensure plenty of bird-watching opportunities. Following a three hour, information filled walk we'll treat you to a delicious breakfast of freshly prepared delicacies and local fruits, giving you plenty of time to discuss the morning's discoveries.

If you book to stay in one of our eco-lodges the night before the tour, there is a supplement of just $10 per person, otherwise the cost is US$ 30 per person and includes breakfast.

Our walks normally take place on the last Saturday of each month but can be specially arranged at other times for a minimum group size of 5 people.

Schedule 2017:

April 29
May 27

Please remember to wear muted colours and comfortable footwear, and bring your binoculars with you.

Minimum size of group is 5 and maximum 10, and will be accompanied by at least two guides.

All proceeds from the bird walks will go directly towards the running of Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary.
